What a Shocker!I should have realised that the third round of the 750MC Toyo Tyres Golf GTi Championship, held on the world famous Brands Hatch Indy circuit wasn’t going to be “my race” the minute I fell ill on the day before! Waking up on the Saturday morning, having breakfast and then needing to go back to bed for the rest of the day was certainly not a good omen for things to come and so it proved…As is usual with anything involving adrenalin, as soon as you get going pain or tiredness fade into the background. And that was just what my pain did, although unfortunately on this occasion it was to be replaced with another problem, an ill handling car! The Golf felt fine when asked to turn right, indeed with some setup changes that had been made to the rear of the car it was the best it has been so far. It was therefore more than an annoyance that the car was so unwilling to cooperate when asked to turn left in anger! Not such a problem you may think with only two left handed corners on the circuit and, yes it would have a far greater problem if the car had been reluctant to turn right. However there was the not too insignificant fact to consider that the two left handers were at critical points on the circuit. “Graham Hill” bend leading on to the “Cooper Straight” and “Surtees”, which is an extremely fast corner leading to a prime overtaking opportunity into “Clearways”.
