Mallory Park race reportBack With A Bang!After my 3 month enforced break from racing I was eager to get back behind the wheel and banish the memories of the last meeting where both the car and I were both rather poorly. Mallory Park and the 2nd August 2009 were the location date of my “comeback” and what an exciting and eventful meeting it was to prove to be! The day was already going to be pretty hectic due to the fact that I was going to be taking on both an extra qualifying session and an extra race (on top of the two already scheduled for the Golf GTi championship). The extra race that I was entered for was that of the pilot series for front wheel drive cars from the VAG stable, the appropriately named VAG Trophy race series.Having never driven at Mallory Park before and not having had the opportunity to test beforehand meant that the first time I would drive the car (with its newly rebuilt and re-valved suspension) would be the VAG Trophy qualifying session! With the aforementioned taken into account I was delighted to find myself 8th overall and 3rd in class, only 0.12 from class pole! After what seemed like all too short a break I was out for qualifying again, this time for the Golf GTi championship races. All was going well until about 10 minutes into the session when I caught a slower car through Gerrards (the longest right hand corner on any race circuit in this country). I was travelling at well above the speed limit for public roads, when the driver of the slower car decided to lift off suddenly!
